We are trying to bill out to medical insurance for a periodontal cleaning. The patient is diabetic and Dr Hanson was told that we can bill medical insurance for periodontal cleanings if the patient is diabetic. I can not find the right code to bill this claim out.

Dr. Scriabin,
Payment for periodontal cleanings depends on the insurance companies. You can file with a diagnosis including V12.2 history of endocrine, metabolic and immunity disorders. I would suggest that you don't use this as the primary diagnosis. Use along with a gingival disease diagnosis as the primary. The procedure code could be the "D" code. The other option would be 41899 which is unlisted dentoalveolar procedure. If you use this code you will have to send a report to show medical necessity.
I have heard that some dental insurance will allow additional cleanings per year if the the patient has this cor-mobity.
