Hi, can I bill NTI (D7880) to medical? If so, what CPT code should I use?

Great question. Yes you can, and many medical insurers actually accept code D7880! That may sound funny, i know, since D7880 is a CDT code, but we have seen many medical insurers process that code. Keep in mind, not all patient policies include coverage for treatment of TMJ disorders, but many do.

I always recommend using the "ZZ" qualifier on the line item of the claim in the supplemental information area (which is the red shaded line on each line item in field 24 that is typically left blank) and provide a short description of what service each one is being used represent (since D7880 is a "by report" code), and using a short description like: "removable intra-oral appliance to treat TMJ disorder"
